Spray:

0.5% spray (eg, Chloraseptic spray): Children ≥3 years and Adolescents: Topical: 1 spray to the affected area; keep in place for at least 15 seconds, then expectorate; may repeat every 2 hours as needed.

Dosage Forms Considerations

Castellani Paint Modified contains phenol, resorcinol, basic fuchsin, acetone, and alcohol.

Colorless formulations may be available without basic fuchsin.

Administration: Adult

Oral: Spray and rinse should be allowed to remain in mouth for ~15 seconds, then expectorated; do not swallow. Shake rinse well prior to use.

Topical: Castellani Paint 1.5% Modified Solution: Clean area prior to application. Check skin for sensitivity to phenol prior to applying. May stain skin and clothing.

Administration: Pediatric

Topical (Oral):

Rinse: Infants ≥4 months, Children, and Adolescents: Shake well prior to use. Gargle/rinse for ~15 seconds and then expectorate. For infants and young children unable to gargle or rinse, apply to the affected area with a clean swab.

Spray: Children ≥3 years and Adolescents: Spray affected area; allow to remain in mouth for at least 15 seconds, then expectorate; do not swallow. Children <12 years of age require adult supervision with use of this product.

Topical (Dermal): Castellani Paint Modified Solution: For external use only. Avoid contact with eyes. Clean area and check skin for sensitivity to phenol prior to application. May stain skin and clothing. Wash hands after use.

Other warnings/precautions:

• OTC labeling: Sore throat: Not for use >7 days or if pain, redness, or irritation continues. If sore throat is severe, not for use >2 days or if followed by fever, headache, rash, swelling, nausea, or vomiting. Oral gargles and sprays should not be swallowed.

• OTC labeling: Topical antiseptic: Do not use in eyes, or apply to large areas of the body, deep or puncture wounds, animal bites or burns. Do not use for >7 days; do not bandage affected area.

Phenol is systemically absorbed following oral ingestion, inhalation, or application to the skin. Fetotoxic effects have been observed in animal reproduction studies (Bruce, 1987).
