Cervical spine imaging of adults following trauma

Cervical spine imaging of adults following trauma
As indicated above, computed tomography (CT) is the preferred imaging technique when cervical spine injury is suspected following trauma. Plain radiography is only used for the initial evaluation if the clinician is operating in a resource-limited setting without ready access to CT and without the capacity to transfer the patient to a facility with CT.
CT: computed tomography; OR: operating room; C-spine: cervical spine; NEXUS: National Emergency X-Radiography Utilization Study; MRI: magnetic resonance imaging; SCIWORA: spinal cord injury without radiographic abnormality.
* Patients who are unresponsive or have an altered mental status and in whom there is concern for possible ligamentous injury of the C-spine, require immobilization of the C-spine until they can be evaluated clinically or an MRI is obtained. Clearance of the C-spine should be performed expeditiously. Refer to text for details.
