Subtendinous (retrocalcaneal) bursitis deep to Achilles tendon

Subtendinous (retrocalcaneal) bursitis deep to Achilles tendon
This transverse ultrasound image shows a normal Achilles tendon (arrowhead) and deep to the tendon the hypoechoic (ie, black-appearing) subtendinous (ie, retrocalcaneal) bursa (arrow). The bursa is swollen with fluid, a finding consistent with bursitis.
