The illustrations above demonstrate how the function of the iliotibial band (ITB) depends on the position of the knee:
(A) With the knee in full extension, the ITB acts as an active knee extensor.
(B) At 20° to 30° of knee flexion, the ITB becomes an active knee flexor.
