Perineal resection

The figure depicts the dissection of the perineum. The anus is closed with a pursestring suture, the skin is incised, and the dissection includes the external sphincter muscles. Note the levator muscle attachment along the pelvic sidewall. These muscles are divided for mobilization of the rectum.
