Basic bisphosphonate chemical structure

The two phosphonate (PO₃) groups covalently linked to carbon (C) determine both the name "bisphosphonate" and the function. Bisphosphonates differ from each other at the two side chains, R₁ and R₂, which determine their chemical properties and pharmacokinetics.
