Atrial fibrillation

This drawing shows where the heart is located in the chest. In atrial fibrillation, the electrical signals that control the heartbeat are abnormal. As a result, the top two chambers of the heart (see arrows) stop pumping effectively, and blood that should move out of these chambers gets left behind.
