Failed airway algorithm

Failed airway algorithm
ETT: endotracheal tube.
* Placement of an extra-glottic device is contraindicated in the setting of severe hypopharyngeal pathology, such as epiglottitis. Should a surgical airway be needed in these circumstances, one attempt at tracheal intubation using a video laryngoscope or direct laryngoscopy may be performed, provided preparations for a surgical airway occur simultaneously.
¶ In children under 8 years of age an uncuffed or cuffed endotracheal tube may be placed. In neonates, uncuffed endotracheal tubes should be placed.
