Ability of combined nutritional intervention (weight loss, salt restriction, and avoidance of excess alcohol [squares]) to maintain normotension as compared with a control group without dietary modification (circles) after cessation of previously successful antihypertensive therapy. Hypertension recurred in over 90% of control patients but in only 60% with dietary modification.
