Oblique fractures of the lateral and posterior malleoli

Oblique fractures of the lateral and posterior malleoli
While the fracture of the lateral malleolus (arrow) is clearly seen on both views, the posterior malleolar fracture (arrowhead) is only seen on the lateral view. This combination of injuries is unstable and requires orthopedic referral regardless of whether widening of the medial joint line (dashed arrow) is apparent.
AP: anterior posterior.
