Connection of the superior vena cava to the pulmonary arteries and takedown of previous systemic-to-pulmonary artery shunts constitutes the stage II procedure. The bidirectional Glenn shunt is a direct anastomosis of the superior vena cava to the central pulmonary artery. The principle advantage of the bidirectional Glenn shunt is the ease of construction; it can even be accomplished without the use of cardiopulmonary bypass in selected cases.
