A comparison of the reactivity of the Venereal Disease Research Laboratory (VDRL) and fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption (FTA-ABS) during the course of untreated syphilis. A substantial proportion of persons with primary syphilis may not have developed a diagnostic antibody response at the time the chancre of primary syphilis appears.
