Medications that interfere with the effect of warfarin
May increase anti-clotting effect (and possibly increase risk of bleeding)
Antibiotics
Examples: Amoxicillin (brand name: Amoxil), amoxicillin-clavulanate (brand name: Augmentin), ciprofloxacin (brand name: Cipro), levofloxacin (brand name: Levaquin), metronidazole (brand name: Flagyl), trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (brand name: Bactrim); others
Antifungals
Example: Fluconazole (brand name: Diflucan); posaconazole (brand name: Noxafil), voriconazole (brand name: Vfend); others
Hormones
Examples: Methyltestosterone (brand name: Methitest), oxandrolone (brand name: Oxandrin), testosterone (brand names: Androderm, AndroGel, Axiron, Fortesta, Testim); others
Antidepressants or nerve pain

  • Many over-the-counter pain relievers and cough/cold medicines contain an NSAID

Stomach and heartburn relief
Cimetidine (brand name: Tagamet), omeprazole (brand name: Prilosec)
Steroids (glucocorticoids)

Seizures or nerve pain

Stomach and nausea

Vitamin K
Avoid vitamin K supplements except the small amount in a daily multiple vitamin ("multivitamin") pill. If you take a multivitamin be sure to take it every day. If you stop taking a multivitamin, let your doctor know.
This is only a partial list. Many other drugs can interact with warfarin. Always tell your doctor before starting or stopping any drug when you are on warfarin, including over-the-counter and herbs/natural supplements. You may need a blood test and a change in your warfarin dose when you start or stop another medicine that can interact with warfarin.
