Needle insertion technique for suprapubic aspiration

Needle insertion technique for suprapubic aspiration
Whenever available, we recommend point-of-care ultrasound to confirm the presence of sufficient volume of urine in the bladder prior to suprapubic aspiration. A 1.5-inch, 22-gauge needle attached to a 3- or 5-mL syringe is inserted in the midline, 1 to 2 cm above the pubic symphysis. The needle should be angled 10 to 20 degrees from vertical and advanced under negative pressure until urine returns.
