Sokal score interpretation

Sokal score <0.8: Low risk
Sokal score ≥0.8 and <1.2: Intermediate risk
Sokal score ≥1.2: High risk

Notes
  • The Sokal score is primarily used to stratify patients enrolled on clinical trials by disease aggressiveness.
  • In the original Sokal study of 813 patients with newly diagnosed chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) treated with chemotherapy (eg, busulfan), patients with low-risk disease had overall survival rates at 2 and 5 years of 90 and 81%, respectively.
  • By comparison, patients with high-risk disease had a 65% survival rate at 2 years. Survival rates have improved dramatically since the incorporation of tyrosine kinase inhibitors into the first-line treatment of patients with CML.

Equations used

Sokal_score = e(0.0116*(Age-43.4)+0.0345*(Spleen_below_costal_margin-7.51)+0.188*(sq(Platelets/700)-0.563)+0.0887*(Percent_blasts-2.1))

Only digits 0 to 9 and a single decimal point (".") are acceptable as numeric inputs. Attempted input of other characters into a numeric field may lead to an incorrect result.
