Notes

The Sokal score is primarily used to stratify patients enrolled on clinical trials by disease aggressiveness.
In the original Sokal study of 813 patients with newly diagnosed chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) treated with chemotherapy (eg, busulfan), patients with low-risk disease had overall survival rates at 2 and 5 years of 90 and 81%, respectively.
By comparison, patients with high-risk disease had a 65% survival rate at 2 years. Survival rates have improved dramatically since the incorporation of tyrosine kinase inhibitors into the first-line treatment of patients with CML.
