Multiple brain metastases from melanoma

Multiple brain metastases from melanoma
69-year-old with melanoma metastases containing both paramagnetic melanin and hemorrhage. T1-weighted MRI (A) shows multiple brain masses; T1 hyperintensity could be explained by hemorrhage (methemoglobin) or paramagnetic melanin. On T2*-weighted gradient echo MRI (B), there are large and small foci of hypointensity in these metastases consistent with hemorrhage, although melanin may also account for some of the reduced signal intensity. Relatively little enhancement is demonstrated on postcontrast T1-weighted MRI (C) compared with the precontrast images (A).
MRI: magnetic resonance imaging.
