Clinical similarities of fibromyalgia (FM) and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS)
Female predominance. In clinic, 60 to 80% female. In general population, twice as common in females.
Age of onset, usually 20 to 50 years.
Symptoms overlap:
Exhaustion
Post-exertional malaise
Widespread myalgias
Cognitive, sleep, and mood disturbances
Physical and laboratory examination unremarkable.
Common associated disorders:
Precipitating event, viral infection, including COVID-19, physical, emotional trauma
Autonomic nervous system dysfunction
Small fiber neuropathy
