Ultrasound showing a multicystic ovary in an adolescent

Ultrasound showing a multicystic ovary in an adolescent
Transabdominal ultrasonography in this adolescent with PCOS shows an ovary with volume of 8.45 mL with 11 follicles ranging in size from 4 to 9 mm diameter in this maximal plane. Although this follicle number meets adult criteria for PCOM, in adolescents, there are no criteria to define follicle excess or PCOM. In an adolescent, this ovary is considered a normal variant, ie, a multicystic ovary.
OV: ovarian volume; FNPS: follicle number per section; PCOS: polycystic ovary syndrome; PCOM: polycystic ovary morphology.
