Treatment of primary headache associated with sexual activity

Treatment of primary headache associated with sexual activity
Treatment options are applicable for nonpregnant patients diagnosed with primary headache associated with sexual activity after secondary causes have been excluded. Refer to the UpToDate topic on the evaluation and diagnosis of primary headache associated with sexual activity for additional details.

IV: intravenous; IM: intramuscular.

* For patients weighing <50 kg or >64 years old, use a reduced dose of ketorolac (15 mg IV or 30 mg IM once).

ΒΆ Preventive therapy may be given either 30 to 60 minutes prior to sexual activity or as daily prophylaxis for patients with headache attacks that are frequent. Initial dosing may be subsequently titrated to effect as tolerated. If symptoms persist with the selected initial preventive medication used at a therapeutic dose, discontinue and switch to the alternative agent.
