Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)

Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO)
These drawings show what happens to a person's blood during ECMO. The tubes ("cannula") might be placed into different blood vessels depending on the situation. Blood that is low in oxygen flows from the person's body through the ECMO pump, and extra oxygen is added. Then the blood is warmed and returned to the person.
