PET and PET/CT scans of a patient with active large vessel involvement secondary to GCA

PET and PET/CT scans of a patient with active large vessel involvement secondary to GCA

(A) 18F-FDG PET/CT "MIP" view.

(B) Coronal (left panel), sagittal (middle panel), and axial (right panel) PET views.

Vascular (arterial) 18F-FDG uptake at carotids (C), ascending and descending aorta (D), aortic arc (E), and abdominal aorta (F).

PET/CT scan referable to a grade 3 large vessel vasculitis according to Meller's disease scale. Intense FDG uptake (higher than liver uptake) at ascending aorta, aortic arch, descending aorta, and abdominal aorta. Carotids and epiaortic and iliac vessels show slightly lower tracer uptake compatible with a grade 2 large vessel vasculitis (equal to liver uptake).
PET: positron emission tomography; CT: computed tomography; GCA: giant cell arteritis; 18F-FDG: 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose; MIP: maximum intensity projection.
