Notes
  • This calculator uses the equations from Hankinson 1999 (NHANES III) where available and equations from Knudson 1983 where there are deficits in the data (patients who are not 8 to 17 years of age and patients age 8 to 17 years who are not White, Black or African American, or of Mexican American ethnicity).
  • PEF: peak expiratory flow.

Calculation details and variables
  • In the following cases the Hankinson equation is used: PEF predicted[L/min] = 60 * (b0 + (b1 * Age[yr]) + (b2 * Age2[yr]) + (b3 * Height[cm]2)) is used with the specified coefficients:
    • For a White female 8 to 17.99 years old: b0 = -3.6181; b1 = 0.60644; b2 = -0.016846; b3 = 0.00018623.
    • For a Black or African American female, 8 to 17.99 years old: b0 = -1.2398; b1 = 0.16375; b2 = 0; b3 = 0.00019746.
    • For a Mexican American female, 8 to 17.99 years old: b0 = -3.2549; b1 = 0.47495; b2 = -0.013193; b3 = 0.00022203.
    • In all females under age 8 and in females of other race/ethnicities: PEF predicted[L/min] = ((Height[cm] - 100) * 5) + 100

Only digits 0 to 9 and a single decimal point (".") are acceptable as numeric inputs. Attempted input of other characters into a numeric field may lead to an incorrect result.
