Secondary palpation of cricothyroid membrane during cricothyrotomy
During the scalpel-finger-bougie technique for cricothyrotomy, the clinician re-palpates the cricothyroid membrane after the vertical incision is made. This step is crucial for identifying anatomic landmarks, especially in patients who are obese, bearded, or bleeding substantially; or those who have distorted neck anatomy (eg, abscess, mass).
