Dynamic hyperinflation during exercise in patients with obstructive lung disease

Dynamic hyperinflation during exercise in patients with obstructive lung disease
Panel A demonstrates a slow vital capacity, followed by tidal breathing at rest, a deep breath to TLC, and then progressive increases in tidal volume accompanied by increases in IC as EELV moves toward RV and EILV moves toward TLC.
Panel B shows the same tracing in a patient with obstructive lung disease, who starts off with more gas trapping (higher RV), and has a progressive rise in EELV with exercise due to dynamic hyperinflation, which reduced IC.
TLC: total lung capacity; IC: inspiratory capacity; EELV: end-expiratory lung volume; VC: vital capacity; RV: residual volume; EILV: end-inspiratory lung volume.
