Sickle cells

Normal red blood cells are disc-shaped and flexible, like a half-filled water balloon. Sickle cells have an abnormal shape. Under a microscope, they look crescent-shaped, similar to an old-time farming tool called a "sickle." They are also less flexible than normal red blood cells.
