Diffuse alveolar damage

Diffuse alveolar damage
Axial supine computed tomography (CT) scan shows the three zones of Gattinoni in a patient with diffuse alveolar damage. The ventral (anterior in a supine patient) lung, also called baby lung, is barely involved and is susceptible to barotrauma during mechanical ventilation. The middle third of the lung shows primarily ground-glass opacification, and its aeration can be improved with mechanical ventilation. The dorsal (posterior in a supine patient) lung is consolidated and partially atelectatic; it is less responsive to mechanical ventilation.
