Anatomy of the peroneal nerve

Anatomy of the peroneal nerve
The illustrations show the anatomy of the peroneal nerve.
(A) The common peroneal nerve division of the sciatic nerve innervates the anterior and lateral compartments of the leg.
(B) The common peroneal nerve continues between the peroneus longus muscle and fibula, dividing into the superficial and deep branches. The deep peroneal nerve travels along the anterior cortex of the fibula and then courses distally.
(C) The superficial peroneal nerve travels distally in the lateral compartment of the leg, providing motor innervation to the peroneus longus and peroneus brevis and sensory innervation to the lateral lower leg and the dorsum of the foot. The deep peroneal nerve provides motor innervation to the foot and toe dorsiflexors and sensory innervation to the first web space.
