Buttressing the anastomosis and ischemic area

Buttressing the anastomosis and ischemic area
After a completed hand-sewn bowel anastomosis, seromuscular (Lembert) sutures can be used to buttress the anastomosis as a second layer. However, no compelling evidence has shown that this is superior to a single-layer reconstruction. On the contrary, the seromuscular sutures could in theory create an ischemic area (arrow).
