Renal mass biopsy

Renal mass biopsy
Renal mass biopsy should be considered when a mass is suspected to be hematologic, metastatic, inflammatory, or infectious.
Renal mass biopsy is not required for:
  1. Young/healthy patients who are unwilling to accept the uncertainties associated with renal mass biopsy; or
  2. Older/frail patients who will be managed conservatively independent of renal mass biopsy.
Counsel regarding rationale, positive/negative predictive values, potential risks, and nondiagnostic rates of renal mass biopsy.
Multiple core biopsies are preferred over fine-needle aspiration.
