Calculator: Transferrin saturation (TSAT) in adults (SI units)*

Calculator: Transferrin saturation (TSAT) in adults (SI units)*

Input

Serum iron   mcmol/L
TIBC   mcmol/L

Result

Important: Inputs must be complete to perform calculation.

TSAT   %

Notes
  • TSAT should be evaluated in light of the clinical situation and other iron studies, especially serum ferritin. For more information, see UpToDate topics on iron overload and iron deficiency.
  • The normal range for TSAT is from 20 to 50%.
  • A high TSAT (≥45% in males or ≥40% in females) is suggestive of iron overload.
  • A low TSAT (<16% in nonpregnant adults or <20% during pregnancy) is consistent with iron deficiency.
  • TIBC: serum total iron binding capacity.
  • * This calculator uses SI units (Système international d'unités) as the default for inputs. Do not use this calculator if you are using conventional units (also known as US units and gravimetric units); please refer instead to the conventional units version of this calculator.

Equations used

TSAT = (Serum_iron / TIBC) * 100

Only digits 0 to 9 and a single decimal point (".") are acceptable as numeric inputs. Attempted input of other characters into a numeric field may lead to an incorrect result.
